Business Contract Hire Guide

Business Contract Hire (BCH) is a vehicle leasing arrangement commonly used by businesses and individuals to acquire a vehicle for a fixed period. In a BCH agreement, the lessee (individual or business) enters into a contract with a funder (lessor) to lease a vehicle for an agreed term, typically 2–5 years.

The lessee makes fixed monthly payments to the funder, covering the vehicle’s depreciation and the funder’s service costs. The lessee does not own the vehicle and must return it at the end of the contract.

Key Features of Business Contract Hire

Low Initial Outlay:
Initial rental payments (deposits) can range from one month’s rental to 50% of the vehicle’s cost.

Road Tax Included:
Initial and annual road tax is included for the duration of the lease.

No Ownership:
The customer does not gain ownership during the lease term. Business Contract Hire may provide tax advantages for businesses.

Fixed Term and Payments:
Lease terms and monthly payments are fixed, simplifying budgeting and planning.

Maintenance and Service Packages:
Optional maintenance and servicing packages can be included at an additional monthly charge.

Breakdown & Replacement Vehicle:
Optional breakdown cover and replacement vehicle cover are available at an additional charge.

Mileage Limitations:
Agreements often include mileage limits. Exceeding the agreed mileage may result in additional charges, detailed in the quotation and finance agreement.

End-of-Lease Options:
At the end of the lease, vehicles are returned to the funder. Some agreements may offer an option to purchase at a predetermined price.

Concerns / Risks

  1. No Ownership at the End:
Payments do not contribute to asset ownership.
  2. Mileage Restrictions & Charges:
Exceeding agreed mileage may result in additional costs.
  3. Wear and Tear Charges:
Customers may be liable for excessive wear and tear beyond normal usage.
  4. Early Termination Penalties:
Ending the contract early may incur significant penalties.
  5. Credit Impact:
Failure to meet payments may negatively affect the customer’s credit rating.

Customer Maintained Contracts:
Running costs, including maintenance, servicing, tyres, and wear and tear, are the responsibility of the customer.

Used Vehicles:
BCH agreements are currently not available for used vehicles.

Motor Insurance:
Vehicles must be insured with fully comprehensive motor insurance.

Manufacturer Warranty:
All new vehicles come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Service and maintenance must follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain warranty validity.
